Emily Nelson was crowned Miss Pleasant Grove 2009 at Pleasant Grove High School in an auditorium overflowing with spectators.
The 2.5-hour event drew a sold-out crowd with standing room only on Saturday night. With 15 contestants at the Miss Pleasant Grove Scholarship Pageant, the program was filled with local entertainment.
The newly appointed Miss PG has four attendants. They are first runner-up Mady Memmott, second runner-up Amanda Cannon, third runner-up Kimberly Labrum and fourth runner-up Adriana Turley. Each will represent the city at parades and other events through the year as well as compete at other scholarship pageants.
“We’ve seen a lot of talent and ability tonight,” said Pleasant Grove Mayor Mike Daniels of the 15 contestants. “Your royalty is in there, they’re there.”Other awards were given at the event to Brooklyn Bond as Miss Photogenic, Marissa Walker as selling the most tickets, Kara Norsworthy for her platform, and Alisha Garner selected by her peers for the Spirit of Miss PG Award.
Jadrie Carter ran away with the physical fitness and swimwear award, Brooklyn Bond won the presentation and poise/evening wear competition, Rachel Harmon was selected for the private interview winner, and Talia Wilson took the artistic expression and talent award. “We’ve had 15 outstanding young women who’ve done amazing platforms,” said Terry Marchbanks, pageant spokeswoman.
Emily Nelson established a platform called “ABC’s of Teaching” and will support “believing in children” as part of carrying the platform in to the schools and homes of Pleasant Grove.
As Miss PG 2009, she wins $3,000 in scholarship funds and a $2,500 tuition waiver scholarship at Capelli Institute upon completion of her one-year service.
The theme of the pageant this year was “On Broadway.” The Miss Pleasant Grove Scholarship Pageant is one of the first staged for the pageant season in Utah County because the city’s celebration “Strawberry Days” is one of the earlier events produced during the summer months and the royalty must present themselves to dignitaries inviting them to the week-long event.
